Snow Days

I LOVED snow days when I was a kid. I even loved them as a tween because I could curl up in my bed with a favorite book, stay in my pajamas all day, bake with my mom or do crafts with my brothers. We'd get up early on a possible snow day and creep into the livingroom and huddle under our blanket, eyes glued to the TV until our school was announced. When we'd finally see it, OFF went our blankets and we retreat to our rooms to play, read or drag out toys and games. My mother would put on the hot chocolate and make us a special breakfast of French toast or pancakes. It_was_awesome!

Fast forward to my life today:

The school's automated system wakes me up by
calling my cell phone.

I yell to my daughter that there's no school.

She goes back to sleep.

I go back to sleep.

Snow days are luxuries that West Coast students never get. They get to surf, rollerblade, walk around without a heavy winter coat and gloves, hell they don't even have to own that stuff! We slog through the slush and snow, and if we're lucky on a snow day, may get to leave our house by noon if our street has been plowed. We get to stay inside while our skin grows pale. So yeah, we don't get excited in this house over snow days. We'd much rather be beaching it, shopping or walking around in shorts and t-shirts. This East Coast weather is pretty, unless you live in it.
