Save Your Postage.

I used to like Christmas cards. Hell, I used to make my own and even write them out in calligraphy! The outside of the card would be stamped, embossed and tied with a ribbon. My cards riveled Paperchase's line. And then..... I gave it up. It grew tiring and costly, and I just got over it. I never received as many as I sent out or made -- maybe less than 10. So I figured it was no great loss to not participate in the mass mailing.

The trouble now is, I can't get people to stop sending them to me. Granted there are a LOT fewer, and I did revisit sending cards a couple of years ago. I figured it was a nice thing to do for my daughter. When I was a kid, we'd fight over who got to open the card, so we had to take turns. When there's no one else who cares about them, they're simply thrown in a pile to wait for her return home from school. And even then, once they're opened, the envelope never makes it to the trash unless I put it there and the cards are left, on the kitchen table, the dining room table or knocked on the floor if thrown down on the hassock in the first place. I eye them long enough to see if I could use any part of them for scrapbooking (although who has time for that anymore? I can't remember when I last took a holiday photo of my daughter, or the tree or the presents), and THEN..... they go in the trash. They are not displayed. They go in the trash to go into the garbage bin to go into the landfill.

Mother Nature does not approve.
And have you seen the natural disasters this year?
Not only does she not approve, she's pissed!

And anymore..... so am I. Unless that card can be made into shelter, a car or food someday, I've no use for it. Some people consider card sending to be a "nice gesture." If that isn't the most convenient excuse for "I DID SOMETHING FOR YOU TO EASE MY CONSCIENCE AND REAFFIRM THAT I AM A GOOD PERSON, SO NOW YOU HAVE TO LIKE ME," I don't know what is. They think it's nice. I think it's assault. I tell them not to send me a card because it will just end up in the garbage. They tell me 'too bad, I'm sending it anyway.' Card arrives, doesn't even get opened and is immediately thrown into the garbage. To me, it's fucking ridiculous when I tell someone 'DON'T DO IT' and they do it anyway. But this, this is what people do. I set boundaries, they ignore them. And I'm not whimpy about setting boundaries. I can't remember the last time I minced words about anything.

I'm trying to get rid of STUFF in my house. First, I'm trying to find a use or re-use for it. Then I'm trying to think of someone that might be able to use it, so I can simply give it away. If that fails, I try selling it, and if that fails, it goes to charity.

In the coming year, I want to rededicate my home to being a more natural-products based household. I've already started buying natural products again for the bath and shower. I'm trying to eliminate the toxins created by so many electronic products in the house. I don't want or need any more damn paper than I already have. I'm a flipping writer. I gots tons.... and if I didn't gots tons, I knows how to makes more tons!

So, please, please, save your postage, your time and ink and don't send me no damn Christmas card. Wait until my birthday if you have to send one.....a birthday card is a little different because you actually have to remember the day or check the calendar. It's special and birthday cards get displayed. Sending Christmas cards is not special, it's a flipping obligation. Why else would they make Christmas card tracking books with boxes where you can check if you sent one and they sent one back. That's called keeping score and you can't really claim that you're "being nice" if you keeping notes like your horse is in the third race at Belmont.

If you'll throw a clot and have a stroke without sending me one, sign and send an ecard. If you don't sign it, I'm not opening it. Too many of those flipping sites are now targeting computers with phishing schemes and viruses. Sign it, so I know it's from you.... or it will meet the same fate as the real cards.... TRASH.
