A few celebrities are planning to "die' online. Kim Kardashian, Ryan Seacrest, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, Katie Holmes, Usher and Alicia Keys among others have decided they will stop tweeting beginning tomorrow, December 1, 2010, until their fans kick in a $1 million for Keep A Child Alive, the charitable organization of Alicia Keys, in honor of World AIDS day. The MINIMUM donation is $10. Are you kidding me? How funny would it be if the public showed them that the whole lot wasn't worth resuscitating?
I do understand that it's for a good cause, but I resent being held hostage (I really won't be, I couldn't care less about what these people talk about) for a charitable donation. There's just something a little déclassé about it. I'm sure these celebrities give plenty of money away, but a lot of times, they don't. Sometimes they simply add their name to a cause, show up at an event and the money pours in. In exchange, they get press. I should know, I used to be a publicist.
It's good that they are doing this as a collective and not individually for their own charities because in that case, I wonder just how long Ryan Seacrest or Katie Holme would be on life support before they officially declared themselves dead. I have nothing against either of them, but other celebrities are way more popular and influential. Kim may not even have time to reach 'blue."
