When I enter a store with shopping carts, I immediately look for the container of sanitizing wipes that, in my opinion, should be there. Seeing that container of germ-chasing cloths gives me a little feeling of security that might have a shot of another cold-free, flu-free winter. I do not like shopping at stores without them. In my area, Walmart and Giant Eagle have those wipes. Target and Marc's do not. I feel uneasy as I shop and have used store merchandise to cover the handles (placemats, clothes, etc.). I'm not a complete freak when it comes to germs, but goddamn it, those stores are nuts not to have those wipes! The cost of lost time in their labor force, and yes, some of their employees are going to get sick from people in that store, should make the concept of offering sanitizing wipes a no brainer. Where, even, is your concern for your customer?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta reports that the annual flu outbreak costs the United States $90 BILLION. That's a lot of billion. If every store would have those wipes available, or hell, even have the guy offering you the cart at Walmart actually wipe down the cart (and that's all the parts that you might touch, not simply the handle), maybe we could cut that figure down a bit. With unemployment being as high as it is, it might drop anyway, but that's nothing to celebrate.
Earlier this year, a study on shopping carts revealed that 72 percent had fecal matter on them. Wipes, may not be enough. I'd like GLOVES if I'm going to touch POO!
I think I'm going to call these local retailers and make a bit of stink [pun intended] on Twitter to maybe guilt these retailers into stepping up to the plate. I know that many people don't take advantage of the free "delousing" tool offered to them anyway, but there are those of us really don't want to touch feces from other people...... I got enough of that as a nurse.
